From Dean Rider:

I am pleased to announce that Jamia Stokes, our college's Coordinator for Recruitment and Retention, and her husband Eric Stokes, Assistant Director for Undergraduate Admissions, have been selected to receive this year's Knoxville Area Urban League's Volunteers of the Year Award. This recognition is presented annually at the Knoxville Area Urban League's Equal Opportunity Awards Gala. Jamia and Eric have been volunteering with the Urban League's National Achievers Honor Society program for the past three years. In their role as volunteers they have assisted with planning academic and cultural events for high school students to help them prepare for college. Please join me in congratulating Jamia and Eric for their outstanding work in the community.

Jamia Stokes has been presented with the Educators Hall of Honor Scholarship. This scholarship may be awarded to teacher interns or other undergraduate or graduate students in the College's programs that prepare future educators. It is funded by an endowment created in honor of the educators inducted into The Educators Hall of Honor and is intended to inspire the next generation of educators as a tribute to educators who have inspired, shaped and transformed the lives of their own students and colleagues. Congratulations, Jamia!

Sarah Helm was recently selected to receive a SoACE (Southern Association of Colleges and Employers) Research Fellowship!  She will receive funding that she will be able to put toward collecting data (and more importantly for the qualitative folks, paying for transcription services!) for her dissertation on the experiences of students with psychiatric disabilities in seeking career employment.

Please join us in congratulating two new authors in our doctoral program: Amanda Blakewood (research associate, Ph.D. student) and James DeVita (research associate, Ph.D. student). Amanda and James co-authored an article (with Strayhorn) titled, “Factors Affecting the College Choice of African American Gay Male Undergraduates: Implications for Retention.” And, James also authored a review of Frank Hale’s book titled, “How Black College Empower Black Students.” Both of these appear in a recently released special theme issue of the NASAP Journal (volume 11, issue 1).

Not only is this great news for two of our doctoral students but it continues to strengthen the reputation of our program/department nationally. Join us in celebrating their success!!! Feel free to respond to them directly: ablakewo@utk.edu and jdevita@utk.edu.
