Higher Education Administration PhD Program
Admissions Criteria
Admission for doctoral study in the Higher Education Administration program is an integrated decision process involving a holistic evaluation of the following criteria as evidence for successful advanced graduate study:
- Leadership promise: As reflected in three formal recommendations and in leadership achievement demonstrated by professional activity (speeches, publications, special reports, etc.).
- Intellectual aptitude: As reflected in scores on the GRE verbal (minimum 50 th percentile), quantitative (minimum 50 th percentile), and written (minimum 4.5), and in previous graduate GPA (minimum 3.5). A student with a GRE score lower than 50% in verbal or quantitative may be considered if the other score is higher than 50%.
- Professional goals and aspirations compatible with the program: As reflected in personal interview with the program faculty.
- Communication skills: As reflected in a writing sample.
Two Step Process for Applying to HEAM
Step 1: Applying to the Graduate School:
Submit your application materials to the Graduate School at least 4 to 6 weeks prior to the deadline for the program to which you are applying so they can be processed and forwarded to the Department by that date. The items listed below must be sent to:

A $35.00 non-refundable application fee.

An official transcript from each university you have attended (both graduate and undergraduate).

Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Scores.

Update your status! If you have already been admitted to the Graduate School (either as a non-degree student or a degree-seeking student), you will need to complete a "Request for Change of Graduate Program" form (also referred to as a "revision form"). This form can be obtained from the Office of Graduate and International Admissions or online at http://gradstudies.utk.edu/request.pdf.

To be considered for admission to the Higher Education Administration program, applicants must:
- Complete the HEAM Program Application which includes a personal statement outlining your goals, showing your compatability with the HEAM Program, and provide evidence of commitment to the profession.
- Submit a current resume in electronic form to Karen Crumley.
- A letter of introduction. Limit this letter to no more than 3 typed, double-spaced pages and including

| - how your past educational, work, and/or personal experiences led you to these goals | |
| - how you think this program and degree can assist you in reaching these goals |
- A writing sample. This may be a copy of a thesis written for a graduate degree, a published article, a legal brief, a research report or course paper, or another form of writing that you feel represents your professional writing skills and style.
- Have recent (within five years) GRE Scores of at least 900 (combined) on the verbal and quantitative sections and 4 on the writing portion.
- Have an earned Graduate GPA of 3.3 or higher.
- Submit 3 Rating forms (references) which speak to your strengths and weaknesses as a student affairs/student services practitioner and as a student .
Students are admitted to the Higher Education Administration (HEAM) Program each spring for matriculation in the fall. Faculty will review applications and in some cases a representative of your program may contact you for an interview. While it is best to interview on campus, those students who have difficulty doing so may make alternative arrangements.
