Graduate Student Senate Representative
Greetings, ELPS Graduate Students!
I hope that this message finds all of you well. I wanted to introduce myself as your ELPS Graduate Student Senate (GSS) Representative; to inform you of GSS services and resources; and to welcome any feedback or ideas you may have regarding the direction of the Senate this year. I also would like to provide you with a brief overview of what GSS does for you.
Who am I? My name is Andrew Quentin Morse and I am a recent BA graduate from the University of Northern Iowa in psychology. While at UNI, I was very active with the student community and served as the student body president from 2007-2008. During this time is when I underwent a very formative experience about the meaning, responsibility, and importance of leadership and service. It is with an understanding similar to, yet built upon, that experience that I am willing and ready to serve as your representative to the Graduate Student Senate. I am a first-year graduate student in the College Student Personnel program and chose UT because the professors and staff that I interacted with over the phone while deliberating about my graduate school choice absolutely amazed me and made me feel welcomed and valued at UT.
What is the Graduate Student Senate? In short, we are a legislative body that responds to the university community by observing the needs of graduate students through student dialogue with its representatives and leadership. Currently, GSS is working on a Graduate Student Bill of Rights and is also looking into equity issues in the university health fee paid by graduate students. Another great thing that is offered to graduate students is travel fund awards, which help to subsidize some of the expenses related to professional development for graduate students who attend and present their research at conferences. Lastly, I would like to welcome any comments or suggestions you may have about the business we conduct this year on your behalf. If you would like to have a conversation about an issue, please do not hesitate to contact me via email at amorse2@utk.edu and I will reply promptly. I am awaiting more information regarding our first meeting, but I will provide you with all of the necessary information once I find out so that you may attend, if you are interested. Thank you for your time and it is a pleasure to serve you this year!
Sincerely,
Andrew Q. Morse

Graduate Student Advisory Board (GSAB) Representative
Hello fellow ELPS students!
My name is Steve Carriere and I am a second year masters student in the College Student Personnel program. I am one of the ELPS representatives on the Deans Graduate Student Advisory Board (GSAB) for the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences so I wanted to take a second to introduce myself and explain my role on the GSAB.
I hail from southern California where I did my undergraduate work at California Lutheran University. At CLU I learned the value of a true liberal arts education and earned a BA in Sociology and I am excited to be continuing my studies here at UT. I look forward to working in higher education and making a difference in the lives of students.
As an aspiring student affairs professional and as a student, I know that we must partner with the university to make the experience the best it can possibly be. Thus, when I was selected last year to represent our department on the GSAB, I thought it would be a great opportunity to do just that. The GSAB works in conjunction with the Dean’s office in an advisory capacity on any issues that may arise and impact the graduate student population. There are representatives from each department that speak for the needs of the students in that department. With that being said, please feel free to contact me at any time with input on issues affecting graduate students in the ELPS department at scarrier@utk.edu.
The advisory board also has a programmatic component which holds responsibility for two main functions, the Fall Research Panel and the Spring Research Colloquium. These unique events are designed to present pertinent information to graduate students regarding the research and dissertation process as well as provide an informal environment in which to showcase the research of our college. We on the GSAB hope that as many students as possible may participate and gain from these events as possible.
This year will be my second year serving our department and I look forward to doing all that I can to make this another great year!
Sincerely,
Steve Carriere
