Norma T. Mertz, EdD
Dr. Mertz is a professor of Higher Education Administration and Program Coordinator for the College Student Personnel Program. A graduate of Teachers College, Columbia University, Dr. Mertz teaches courses in college student personnel, higher education administration and educational administration, including values and ethics in educational leadership, curriculum and teaching in higher education, qualitative research, and research design, and directs doctoral dissertations and masters theses.
Dr. Mertz is the editor of the forthcoming book Breaking into the All-Male Club: Female Professors of Educational Administration, from Suny Press, and co-editor, with Vincent Anfara Jr., of Theoretical Frameworks in Qualitative Research, from Sage. She recently presented two papers and a symposium at AERA in New York: “Documenting Decisions in Qualitative Research with Vincent Anfara; “The Relationship between Athletic and Academic Satisfaction among Division I Student-Athletes” with Terrell Strayhorn and James Phillips; and “Retrieving the Past: Women’s Entry into the Exclusively Male Educational Administration Professoriate” with Martha McCarthy, Diana Pounder, Edith Rusch and Paula Short; a paper at UCEA in Washington, DC, “Administrative Credentialing: Does it Make a Difference ?” with Ellen Eckman, Dawn Wallin and Rosemary Foster; and a paper at ASHE in Orange County, CA, “Graduate Student Choice” with Terrell Strayhorn. Her most recent journal publications include “The Socialization of Assistant Principals” in the Journal of School Leadership; “The Promise of Title IX: Longitudinal Study of Gender in Urban Administration” in Urban Education; and “What’s a Mentor, Anyway?” in Educational Administration Quarterly.
Dr. Mertz’s research interests center on gender and leadership, mentoring, and role socialization.Updated 4/11/2008
