E. Grady Bogue , Ed.D.
Dr. Bogue has been Professor at the University since 1991. Prior to his appointment at UT, he served in higher education administrative appointments at campus and state level: Chancellor of Louisiana State University in Shreveport (1980-1991), Interim Chancellor of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge (1989), Associate Executive Director, Tennessee Higher Education Commission (1974 - 80), and on the administrative staff at the University of Memphis for ten years (1964 - 1974), his last position as Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs. He was an instructor of physics with the U. S. Navy from 1961 - 1964, and served as a communications electronics officer with the U. S. Air Force from 1958 - 1961.
Four of Dr. Bogue's latest published books are Leadership Legacy Moments (ACE/Praeger, 2007), Quality and Accountability in Higher Education (with Kimberely Hall, Praeger/Greenwood, 2003), Exploring the Heritage of American Higher Education (with Jeff Aper, Oryx Press, 2000) and Leadership by Design (Jossey Bass Publishers, 1994). He has published five other books, over 50 articles in such journals as the Harvard Business Review, Journal of Higher Education, Educational Record, Phi Delta Kappan, Planning for Higher Education, Trusteeship, and Leader to Leader. Over the past two decades, six of his speeches have been carried in Vital Speeches of Today.
He was the Director of the Performance Funding project with the Tennessee Higher Education Commission in the 1970s and 1980s. This project was funded by a $500,000 grant that produced the first performance funding policy in American higher education, a policy that allocates a portion of state appropriations on performance variables rather than enrollments. This policy has remained in effect for a quarter century.
Dr. Bogue received the B. S. Degree in Mathematics (1957), the M. S. Degree (1965) and Ed. D. (1968) from the University of Memphis. He earned the first doctoral degree granted by the University of Memphis and was named a distinguished alumnus of the University in 1986. Dr. Bogue has been a consultant on planning and evaluation, assessment and accreditation, and leadership and governance to a wide range of colleges and universities, state level agencies, and corporations. He has participated in exchange travel to China, France, Germany, and republics in the former Soviet Union, and has delivered papers at international meetings in France and Hungary.
