J. Patrick Biddix, Ph.D.
J. Patrick Biddix is Associate Professor of Higher Education in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He teaches courses related to college student personnel, higher education administration, and research methodology. He received his Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies (Higher Education Concentration) from the University of Missouri – St. Louis in 2006, as well as a graduate certificate in Institutional Research, a credential supported by the Association of Institutional Researchers (AIR) and the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) in 2005. He also holds an M.A. in Higher Education (University of Mississippi, 2003) and a B.A. in Classical Civilization (The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, 2001).
Prior to coming to back to Knoxville, Dr. Biddix was Associate Professor and Graduate Program Coordinator for Higher Education and Student Affairs at Valdosta State University (VSU). While at VSU, he secured over $400,000 in grant funding to create and a sustain master’s program. He was the College of Education’s Faculty Excellence in Professional Service Award recipient in 2010 and 2011, served on the Institutional Review Board for four years (Vice Chair, 2010), and was selected as an AERA Division J Emerging Scholar in 2008. His student affairs experience prior to the professorate includes work at Washington University in St. Louis in fraternity/sorority affairs and student housing, a graduate assistantship in financial aid at the University of Mississippi, and service as a leadership consultant for Beta Theta Pi Fraternity in Oxford, Ohio.
Dr. Biddix’s research specializations include civic engagement and campus activism, technology and higher education, research methodology in education, and career development in student affairs. He regularly attends and presents findings from his research at the annual conferences of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA). His published work has appeared in the Journal of College Student Development, the Journal of Student Affairs Research and Practice, Innovative Higher Education, the Journal About Women in Higher Education. He has also published research in interdisciplinary journals on topics related to college students and technology use including New Media and Society and Internet and Higher Education. He has been a member of the editorial board for Oracle: The Research Journal of the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors since 2006 and current serves as Editor.
